These are some of the most famous sites in Italy and they are located only few kilometres away from each other. They belong to Campania Region that is one of the most beautiful of Southern Italy. You can travel there from Rome by car o by train, sicne it is only few hours distant.
If you want your family to explore all those places, it is important to choose a good base. Consider that you will not spend more than 1 day visiting Pompeii and the villages on the Amalfi Coast are much spread and travelling between them is not that easy. It is preferable that you stay in Naples and from there you visit the surroundings.
Naples is the capital of the region but also one of the most iconic and interesting cities in Italy. It is full of art treasures, pictoresque corners and famous monuments. Choosing your accommodation around Piazza Municipio is strategic to explore the city and the neighboring either by train or by private car.
Naples is worth exploring for a least two days. It is one of the most underrated tourist destinations in Europe and some families skip it to visit just Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. Big mistake!
Account for a least two days in Naples, one in Pompeii (including the walk around the crater of Mount Vesuvius that kids would love) one on the Amalfi Coast and one on Capri Island. You will reach Capri by boat (make sure you book the ship tickets in advance or take one of the local tours that do the work for you).
On the contrary you can visit the Amalfi Coast either by train or by car. The train however is not very efficient and comfortable so it is today preferable to hire a local driver to take you around and reach places that you would not without a private vehicle. It is not advisable to drive your own car on the Amalfi Coast by the way: not only the roads are very narrow sided by dizzy high cliffs on the blue sea where barely two cars can pass both ways, but also there are many linitations to traffic and parking and it would be very easy to get fined.
We did not mention the Caserta Royal Palace, Herculaneum and Ischia Island and other precious sites of the area because usually families do not spend more than 4 days in the area. If you do consider visiting them as well, you will not regret!
