Ravenna is a charming city rich in art and history. It used to be the capital of three reigns: the Western Roman Empire, the Ostrogothic Kingdom and the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna.
Due to its many stunning mosaics and the connection to the figure of Dante, it attracts many visitors every year.
The city is also mainly pedestrianized, making it a sought-after destination for families.
1. TAMO Mosaic Museum: this museum is dedicated to mosaics from antiquity to the present day and is located in the medieval church of San Nicolò. Thanks to the RavennAntica Foundation, your children can take part in educational workshops, treasure hunts and guided tours of this museum and other important monuments in the city.
2. The House of Marionettes is a unique museum located in the heart of the city. It features hundreds of precious marionettes, puppets and stage sets that will fascinate your children and stimulate their curiosity. The museum also organizes workshops for puppet construction and produces theatre performances for adults and children.
3. Rasponi crypt and Roof Gardens of Palazzo della Provincia: this charming garden is perfect to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the quiet atmosphere with your kids. The garden is located on a terrace that overlooks Piazza San Francesco.
4. The Basilica of San Francesco: this is one of the most beautiful churches in Ravenna and perfect for Romanesque architecture enthusiasts. Your children will certainly be fascinated by its unusual feature: the pavement is flooded, but it’s still possible to admire the mosaics under the water (and the little fish swimming around!).
5. Giardini Pubblici di Ravenna: this public park is very close to the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, making it perfect to stop by after or before the visit to the church, which can be tiresome for small children. The park, one among many in this city, features a playground and plenty of green space to run around.
6. Mausoleum of Galla Placidia: this is one of the most iconic highlights of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. Due to its small size, the visit to this building is also suitable for smaller children, who will be enchanted by the suggestive mosaics that fill every centimeter of the walls. Don’t forget to look up: the dome is decorated by the mosaic representation of a breathtaking starred sky.
7. Small Museum of Dolls and Other Toys: this suggestive museum displays dolls and baby dolls made of various materials and arranged in chronological order, to give an idea of their evolution from 1850 to 1950. The items shown in the museum also include accessories, playhouses, the reproduction of a colonial-style grocery shop and handmade dolls from the international section.
8. Italia in Miniatura: if Ravenna is your base but you want to tour other places as well, we recommend you visit Italia in Miniatura. This theme park features scale reproductions of the most important architectural landmarks of Italy and Europe. Your kids will hop from one region to another feeling like giants, and they will enjoy many other attractions, such as the Luna Park of Science and the Monorail.
