Visiting Italy during the Christmas season? You and your family can’t miss the traditional Christmas markets! It's a popular tradition all over the country, enjoyed by young and old alike. These events are usually held from the end of November until Christmas, although some last until Epiphany in January.

You'll be able to discover a unique side of cities or towns, sample some local delicacies, and even find original souvenirs to take home. Here's our list of the 10 best Christmas markets from north to south.

Northern Italy

2. Bolzano: In Trentino Alto Adige region, the tradition of Christmas markets is especially deep-rooted, and the one in Bolzano is among the oldest in Italy. Southern Italy

8. Naples: the tradition of Christmas markets and nativity scenes (“presepi”) is deeply rooted in Naples and the market is a popular event spread across squares and streets of the historical center. Families love to try local specialties (such as the “zeppole”) while admiring the colorful decorations and hunting for gifts or souvenirs. Don’t forget to stroll along via San Gregorio Armeno, the “Christmas Alley”, where you can enjoy the sight of nativity scenes all year long.

9. Catania: the Christmas markets of Catania are among the most beautiful in Sicily and are an incredible experience for families visiting the city. Have fun with your kids on the ice-skating rink or at the playground, explore the Santa’s house and be amazed by the talking reindeer.

10. Alberobello: you’ve probably already heard of the unique town of Alberobello in Puglia region, characterized by its traditional “trulli”. What you may not know, however, is that this place transforms itself during the Christmas season! You and your family will be dazzled by the festively lit streets and by the snow crystals projected on the roofs of the trulli. The Christmas Markets of Alberobello are full of musical events, street performers and activities dedicated to your kids, such as the possibility to take a photo with Santa Claus.
