Carnival is an ancient pagan celebration that Catholics inherited and associated with Easter time. It starts the first Sunday of the nine ones that preceed Easter and ends just before Lent.

In Viareggio, on the coast of Tuscany, not far from Pisa Livorno and Florence there is another famous Carnival where giant allegorical floats cross the city surrounded by thousands of people mostly families that see them in awe and clap.
Near Rome, in its beautiful countryside, in the town of Ronciglione there is another famous Carnival. It features vvarious shows linked to the history of the area. The beautiful Renaissance streets and squares of the town gets filled with lights, music, colors, flavours, masks and folk bands
In Acireale near Catania, Sicily splendid papier-mâché works are created and parade floats are also decorated with flowers creating a super colorful show.
The Carnival of Putignano, near Bari in Puglia is also very charming with original allegorical floats and papier-mâché. It is the oldest Carnival parade in Europe.
