The Cinque Terre are five famous pictoresque villages on the east coast of Ligura, a region in north-west of Italy that is archway-shaped on the mediterranean sea. The region is mostly mountenous with cliffs sliding into the water. Therefore there are not many easy drives to reach the colorful towns in the valleys and on the coast. It is strongly suggested instead to leave the car and use the train.
The train line takes you from Genoa Savona and all the main cities to the Cinque Terre. Once you get off the train the town centers and the beach are only 5 min away so you do not need a car.
The area has got a lot of facilities for kids and families including pleasant bike lanes that ride along the shore. Most of the towns are also equipped with free fresh water showers on the beach and children’s games.
Since train connections are frequent and have many stops it is preferable you stay in less famous towns like Fremura or Deiva Marina and take the train from there to the Cinque Terre.
The five famous villages are Monterosso, Manarola, Vernazza, Corniglio and Rio Maggiore. They are always crowded by tourists from April to November and making your family stay there is not only more expensive but probably not th le best choice. Other less famous villages are only 15-20 min train ride away and prices are more reasonable and beaches less busy.
Some of the Cinque Terre are connected by scenic trails. The most famous of them is the Via dell'Amore, the lovers path that connects the towns of Rio Maggiora and Manarola. Hovever, it is not advisable to take kids below 10 on those trails.
You shuld visit all the 5 towns mentioned plus the village of Bonassola and Levanto that are only few train stations away. Once you get off the train thir historic center and beach is only 5 min walk. Beaches are equipped with all facilities, including changing rooms and free fresh water showers. Many of them also have children games by the shore.
The Cinque Terre offer breathtaking panoramas, enchanting medieval colorful villages and claar water beaches. A great combination for a perfect fmaily vacation. Consider visitng two towns maximum per day leaving time for relax by the sea as well.
Last but not least, take all your family to one of the farmers morning markets where they can learn local colorful fruits vegetables and food specialties and taste them. Taste memories sometimes can last longer than images as Marcel Proust taught us.
