Travel Tips

After reading our article on why and how to visit the Colosseum with your children, it is now time to choose the best tours available for your family.
First of all, the Colosseum and the surrounding archaeological area (including the Forums, the Palatine Hill and the Circus Maximus) is mostly outdoor and it will be annoying to tour in a heavy rainy day (yes, it rains in Rome a lot concentrated in few days with an average yearly rainfall higher than London!!!!). Thus, depending on the season of your travel plan accordingly.
In the hot summer days better to start the tour early morning and late afternoon avoiding the exhausting peak hours between 12 and 3 pm.
In the winter it is preferable to start the tours instead between 10 am and 2 pm to enjoy the warmth of the sun and avoid the cold hours.
Children can generally keep attention and enthousiasm for no more than 2.5 h, so better avoid longer tours.
Usually one hour visit of the Colosseum inside and outside is enough. No need to explore the undergrounds as well. Just a small portion of them is open, you can see much from above the arena and it will take you precious time from other must-see nearby attractions such as the Forum or the House of the Emperor.
We suggest to take one of the following tours that combine the Colosseum with another important site around it: either the Forums, the Palatine Hill, the Circus Maximus, Michelangelo’s Moses or the Undergrounds of St Clemens.
The most popular is the Colosseum and Roman Forum Tour for Kids, offered by many companies. We recommend the following that from our experience and from the comments of our moms community stand out:

We do not suggest to take another tour during the same day because it might be too tiring for your family. Read our article about other things to do in Rome for kids for other choices.
Do not forget to bring a bottle of water with you, comfortable shoes and passports to get reductions for kids at the Colosseum and the other great sites.
