Unless it is your last trip to Italy, or your home is very far, consider coming back soon. Italy is one of the culturally richest countries in the whole planet and one visit in never enough. Furthermore it is not that small and you do not want to waste much of your precious vacation travelling around. Our suggestion is: stay focused on one area or region and come come back next time to visit another one.

Sicily is very different from Tuscany and not that close either. You should dedicate a specific holiday to each of those regions. Check our itineraries for help.

Some families try to include all the main art cities, Rome, Florence, Venice in one-week trip. That is possible but not preferable. You waste time in transfers (either by train or car), packing, unpacking, ticketing and much more hussle and bustle. It is best to concentrate on specific area or region if you stay only 7 days, 2 if you stay more.

For instance, the most pupular travel destinations are Rome and Venice, yet they are 4 hours waya from each other by fast train and even more by car. It is not a wise choice to see both in the same family trip.

Focus your trip on one region

This is a good example: if you travel to Florence and its region, Tuscany there is no need to go much further out of it. The area offers a lot of opportunities for top-rank sightseeing and things to do.

Chosse your accommodation carefully and use it as a base of 7 days, no more check in and out. From there make day trips to the most interesting sites of the surrounding. If one day someone is sick, you can still relax around your hotel.

Following the precious example, you can book your room or apartment in Florence. The city already deserves at least two days to visit. Then you can make day trips to Lucca, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano easy without stress.

Avoid driving and exploring on your own

Off-the beaten paths

Italy is very safe in general, but you can get in trouble and waste money easily if you are not careful. Driving in Tuscany for instance might not seem too much of an undertaking, but parking rules are very strict fotr instance in the city centers, they might cost you hefty fines. Furthermore google maps might take you to some off-the beaten tracks trails where you do not want to go with you newly rented car.

Better spend a bit more money and hire a local professional with great reviews online. There are thousands of companies outthere that offer their services with good records. Let them handle the maps and the drive.

Use trains when possible. Trains, especially in central and northern Italy are quite efficient and reasonable. Moreover, the main train stations of the famous art cities are often in the historic center, very close to famous monumnets. If you choose your accommodation near the central stations you can take the train easily and communte in quick day trips. Consider by the way that in high tourist season they mogh be a bit overcrowded.
